The South Shore Park playground was installed in 1996 and is one of the oldest playgrounds in the Milwaukee County Parks system. Funding was approved in the 2022 budget for the replacement of the playground. The new playground system will include ADA-accessible features and surfacing will be upgraded to a "poured-in-place" surfacing (soft, rubberized surface).

The approved budget includes design, removal of existing equipment and surface, installation of the new playground and corresponding site improvements, such as new benches.

The new playground will include a play structure for 2- to 5-year-old kids with a Farmers Market theme, a play structure for 5- to 12-year-old kids with a ship theme, swings, and some stand-alone play pieces.

Construction Timeline (updated March 2025)

Based on lead times for play equipment construction is expected to start no sooner than late June. However, construction start could be sooner or later depending on the manufacturing queue and contractor availability.

Community Engagement

In the Summer and Fall of 2022 Parks staff surveyed park-goers and adjacent neighbors to South Shore Park about the beer garden and parking lot layouts, which included different options for the playground location. Staff reached out to people at the beer garden 5 different times, at the Farmers Market, and hosted an open house where Parks staff presented the options and asked for more input.

The majority preferred that the playground stay where it is regardless of additional amenities. This was a near-unanimous desire at the open house.
