Warnimont Park Gun Club Remediation Project
Milwaukee County is addressing soil contamination at the former gun club site in Warnimont Park as required by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR). The project includes environmental investigation and measures to prevent contaminated material from reaching nearby surface waters through erosion.
Originally funded in 2019, the project required additional funding due to expanded WDNR requirements, including further investigation of Lake Michigan sediments. Severe bluff erosion caused by high lake levels and storm activity also required a redesign of the remediation approach to improve safety, including the addition of a protective barrier fence. Updated construction costs also exceeded the original estimate.
The remediation work will be substantially completed in Fall 2026, with project closeout scheduled through Fall 2029 after the native seed is established. The total project budget is approximately $449,000, funded through Milwaukee County capital improvement appropriations.
Project Goals
Comply with state environmental regulations
Investigate and address contamination from historical gun club operations
Prevent public exposure to contaminated soils
Reduce erosion and protect Lake Michigan from contamination
Improve site safety through stabilization and protective barriers
Establish native habitat
Estimated Trail Closure until September 2026
