A New and Improved Playground

The playground at AC Hanson Park was installed in 1998, making it 28 years old. The old playground will be replaced with a brand-new, freshly designed playground. The new playground will have upgraded safety surfacing, transitioning from sand to a combination of engineered wood fiber (EWF) and poured-in-place (PIP) rubber. It will feature play equipment for ages 2–5 and 5–12, thoughtfully designed with ADA-accessible features to welcome kids of all abilities. Additional playground amenities include new asphalt paving, bike racks, and benches.

Existing Playground at AC Hanson ParkConnecting Parks, Paths, and Play

This playground reconstruction presents an exciting opportunity for the community. Currently, the AC Hanson playground is located just east of Maura Lane. Milwaukee County Parks is exploring the option of relocating the playground slightly west—less than half a mile—from its current location, just off 70th Street.

If this option moves forward, the playground would be located within Kohl Park. The two parks are already connected via informal paths. The soon-to-be constructed extension of the Oak Leaf Trail through Kohl Park will create a safer, more welcoming connection, and improve access for both surrounding neighborhoods.

The decision to reconstruct the playground in its current location or move it slightly west will be guided by what best serves the surrounding community, aligns with Parks’ priorities and long-term vision, and is feasible for the project. The Parks team is committed to actively engaging with the public to gather feedback and ensure community voices help shape this decision.
