Existing Play Equipment
The Mitchell Airport Park playground was installed in 1995 and has some of the oldest playground equipment in the park system. The new playground equipment will offer some ADA-accessible features and will include play structures for both 5-12 and 2-5-year-old children, swings, and some stand-alone play pieces. New resilient play area surfacing will be a combination of poured-in-place (PIP) rubber and engineered wood fiber. The project budget includes the removal of the 1995 playground, and the design and installation of a new playground, as well as corresponding site improvements such as new benches.
Agreement: A review for compliance with FAA regulations was completed and an agreement was reached in late 2022 allowing the playground to remain in its present location. As the new Agreement requires, the playground will reflect an aviation theme and educational elements.
A Groundbreaking event for the playground happened on October 14th at 9 a.m. to celebrate and kick off construction in Mitchell Park Airport Park.
Update 04.15.25
The playground construction is scheduled to be completed in early May 2025. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be scheduled then.
Update 09.24.24
Construction on the new playground is scheduled to begin on October 14 of this year with the removal of existing play equipment and related infrastructure. Park crews may be on site doing prep work the week preceding the construction start. Due to the late start of this project, the new playground will not be fully ready for use until spring of 2025 as some work is temperature dependent.
Update 05.13.24
Design of the new playground equipment is finalized. The new play equipment has been ordered and will reflect an aviation/air travel theme as required by the agreement to allow the playground to remain. The project will also include an underground drainage system for the play area and new benches and bike racks. New asphalt paving will also be included.
See renderings of the playground in the Documents link.
Timeline
Design of the play equipment is mostly complete as of May 2024. Work continues on construction documents.
Construction of the new playground is proposed to begin in Fall of 2024. This is due to long lead times for receiving play equipment once ordered and scheduling a contractor certified to install the play equipment.
The playground will be closed during construction.
Timelines may be subject to change.

This park is a great location and I would hate to see it go/close. I would love to see this brought up to par with the nice MKE parks that are out there. Could possible bring new life to this park. Possible festivals or gatherings.
