The Parks Department has at least 167 bridges within its infrastructure. These bridges vary in age, type (vehicular, pedestrian, golf, etc.), construction and condition. Approximately 40 of the bridges within Parks are built for cars and trucks and are being reviewed and monitored by the Milwaukee County Department of Transportation (MCDOT). The remaining bridges are trail and golf bridges, intended for pedestrians, bikes, golf carts, and the occasional service vehicle. These bridges were previously not regularly inspected. An inventory and condition analysis was conducted to help monitor safety, maintenance, and capital needs.
The inventory and assessment identified nearly $1m in immediate repair, closure, and replacement needs. Bridges will be addressed throughout the County, including corrective actions and maintenance needs to vehicular bridges as compiled by MCDOT's consultant. This project will have multiple phases, with priorities based on safety, timeframes for action determined by structural engineers, as well as park user equity considerations.
The Phase I scope of work includes planning and construction to address the highest priorities identified in the study. Phase II continues planning and construction to address additional bridge rehabilitation and repair needs throughout the County.
