A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the grand opening of the first Milwaukee County Parks playground planned for this year. The Washington Park playground is open for use and is a productive and healthy way to use some energy! The equipment also include options for those who are differently abled; see the linked news story below for additional highlights. Bench installations (on backorder) and a small section of corrective asphalt is pending.
The first new playground of 2022 is nearing completion! The new playground equipment, safety surfacing and asphalt have been installed. Final grading, site restoration and some corrective asphalt work remains. The playground should be open for play in early June.
This playground located south of W. Highland Blvd. (just off of the Hwy. 175 exit ramp) in Washington Park was installed in 2000 and is one of the oldest playgrounds in the parks system. The new playground system will include ADA-accessible features and a combination of "poured-in-place" (soft, rubberized surface) and engineered wood fiber play surfacing. This is a safer and cleaner option than sand surfacing. The project budget includes removal of the year 2000 playground and design and installation of new playground, as well as corresponding site improvements such as new benches and bike racks.
Removal of the old playground began in fall of 2021. Installation of the new playground and completion of remaining site work is scheduled to begin in April 2022.
