A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the grand opening of the playground. The Washington Park playground is open for use and is a productive and healthy way to use some energy! The equipment also included options for those who are differently abled; see the linked news story below for additional highlights. Bench installations (on backorder) and a small section of corrective asphalt are pending.

The previous playground located south of W. Highland Blvd. (just off of the Hwy. 175 exit ramp) in Washington Park was installed in 2000 and was one of the oldest playgrounds in the parks system. The new playground system will include ADA-accessible features and a combination of "poured-in-place" (soft, rubberized surface) and engineered wood fiber play surfacing. This is a safer and cleaner option than sand surfacing. The project budget included removal of the year 2000 playground and design and installation of a new playground, as well as corresponding site improvements such as new benches and bike racks.

Removal of the old playground began in the fall of 2021. Installation of the new playground and completion of the remaining site work were completed in April 2022.
